Every year we have a tradition that Chelsea makes me a scarf, and back in 2025 I thought I would give it a try. As best I can remember I started it around January 2025 and it was finally finished when we were on holiday up in Embo in the September.
As is typical with me, I ended up down a rabbit hole trying to figure out the way to make patterns using knit and purl stitches and in the end I made an excel spreadsheet that would let me draw a pattern on a grid and have it convert to a written pattern I could follow, I used the same tool later to make letter patterns which I’ll share in a later post.
Chelsea’s favourite colour is blue, but I wanted to use a blended colour yarn so it looked a bit fancier than just a plain colour, and I definitely didn’t have the skills to use multiple yarn strands to create something that impressive, I ended up using Atlantis which was a Stylecraft Special DK, from memory I think I used 3 full balls which ended up just shy of 3m long. I lost track of how many rows but I’m sure it was 24 times through a 36 row pattern and it was 60 stitches wide. Thankfully it’s textured and wavey finish stopped it curling up at the edges which was a nice bonus.
This was actually the first proper knitting project I finished and I was quite proud of it, I think the next challenge would be to try adding a 2nd colour in and maybe adding letter patterns within the waves to have some initials or even a name, but that’s something for a future project and definitely not something I’m working on for the minute, the idea is very much cooking away though.
