This project started out with a very specific colour scheme in mind, inspired by…
A little bit of Winnie the Pooh
The original plan was to knit a yellow scarf with red pockets — a very Winnie the Pooh-inspired combination! I thought it would be a fun, playful design, but then I had to consider the most important question: would Mark actually wear a bright yellow scarf?
As much as I loved the original idea, I decided that a bold red scarf would be much more his style. So, the yellow was swapped out, the red took centre stage, and the Winnie the Pooh inspiration became a little more subtle. The pockets stayed, though — because what’s a scarf without a little extra personality?
The honeycomb stitch
The scarf features a reversible honeycomb stitch, giving it a lovely textured finish on both sides. The pattern creates a wonderfully cosy, dimensional fabric that feels a little more special than a simple knitted scarf.
I love how the honeycomb texture gives the bright red yarn so much depth. It makes the scarf interesting to look at without needing lots of different colours or complicated embellishments.
And because the design is reversible, there’s no need to worry too much about which way it sits — both sides have their own lovely texture.
Pockets, because why not?
The pockets are my favourite little addition to this project. They make the scarf feel a bit more playful and give it a practical twist, too. Perfect for keeping hands warm on a chilly day, or simply somewhere to tuck your fingers while out and about.
They also add another layer of texture to the design, standing out against the longer, more uniform honeycomb pattern of the scarf itself.
The finished project
What began as a bright yellow and red, Winnie the Pooh-inspired idea turned into a bold red reversible honeycomb scarf with pockets — a little more understated in colour, but still full of character.
I think that’s one of the lovely things about handmade projects: they don’t always end up looking exactly how you first imagined them. Sometimes a small change makes the finished piece much more suited to the person you’re making it for.
And ultimately, that’s what matters most. This scarf was made with Mark in mind, from the colour choice to the little practical details, and hopefully it will keep him cosy for many winters to come.
A little honeycomb texture, a pair of pockets, and just a hint of Pooh-inspired nostalgia. ❤️
